Wild Focus tours and workshops are led by our owner and expert guide Cody Hoagland, an experienced professional wildlife photographer who intimately knows Yellowstone like a second home. His background combines natural history, ethical wildlife guiding, wildlife advocate and Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem conservation and photography instruction. If you haven't had a chance yet, read about him on our "Meet Your Guide" page.
You absolutely can explore Yellowstone independently.A knowledgeable guide changes how efficiently and deeply you experience it.Rather than spending limited time trying to decide where to go, interpreting current wildlife activity on your own, or driving place to place hoping to get lucky, you have someone using decades of knowledge specific to Yellowstone to help make informed decisions throughout the day. That means more of your energy can go toward observing, photographing, learning, and being present in the experience.
Wild Focus combines decades of Yellowstone field experience, years of expert guiding, and wildlife behavior knowledge with personalized photography instruction, ethical wildlife viewing, and a highly adaptable approach, so the experience is built around both learning and observation. Cody is not simply driving guests to known wildlife location. He is constantly reading conditions, interpreting behavior, adjusting to what is happening in real time, and helping each guest get more from the experience they are having. The goal is not to manufacture a predetermined outcome. It is to help you understand and experience what the wild is actually offering that day that might otherwise be overlooked.
Days may include extended periods in a vehicle, frequent entry and exit from vehicles, standing or walking on uneven natural terrain, carrying personal photography equipment, early mornings, and exposure to changing weather and temperatures. Participants should be comfortable spending extended periods in outdoor field conditions.
Wild Focus experiences are intentionally kept small to 4-5 guests so you can learn comfortably and have more personal guidance in the field. This helps Cody create a more focused, attentive, and responsive photography experience tailored to each individual's specific needs. Some guests may want help with camera settings, composition, or anticipating behavior. Others may be more interested in wildlife knowledge or simply experiencing Yellowstone. The day is not built around a one-size-fits-all script.
The best choice depends on how immersive you want the experience to be, how much time you want in the field, and how much travel support you want included. The Photography Workshops are perfect for someone already planning to visit Yellowstone and interested in having a professional photographer and guide help them maximize their time in the park. They can be booked as single days or grouped into multiple days which gives you a discount when booking multiple days. The shorter Signature Wildlife Photography Adventure offers a focused small-group 4-day wildlife and photography experience, while the Immersive Winter Wildlife Expedition provides a longer, more comprehensive Yellowstone winter experience with additional logistics and inclusions. If you are unsure, you are welcome to contact Wild Focus before reserving and we can go over your options with you.
